As horse owners, we always want the best for our equine companions. Keeping up to date with the latest research on what the best really is for them can be a little tricky, the horse world can be difficult to negotiate with new equipment coming out the latest 'matchy set' catching your eye.

Hoof Boots have actually been around for a little while, with the first modern hoof boot being invented as early as the 1960s. Over the years these have evolved into the variety we have on offer today. If you want to know more history on this topic, it can be found here.

Why?

Hoof Boots offer a compromise between the traditional metal shoe and the barefoot that many are turning towards. They have various benefits including:

  • Providing additional protection to the hoof

  • Shock absorption

  • Can help to reduce hoof injury risk

  • Removable and washable

  • Additional traction

  • Allows the hoof to expand and contract during movement

Fitting Hoof Boots

Choosing the right boot will depend on the requirements of you and your horse, the type of terrain the horse will be on as well as the unique shape of the horses hoof. It is therefore important that your horse has regular visits from their farrier or barefoot trimmer and that hoof boots are fitted within two weeks of a trim by a trained Hoof Boot Fitter.

Many of the Hoof Boots available are to be worn during work, however, there are others that may be used for turnout for those with more sensitive hooves (surface dependent). Additions could be added including pads that could help with issues such as hoof abscesses or for additional cushioning.

Maintenance

Hoof Boots can last a long time if they are well maintained and will remain comfortable for your horse if the following steps are followed:

  1. Hooves are regularly picked out and cleaned

  2. Regular trimming program in place

  3. Check for wear and tear on the Hoof Boots

  4. Clean boots after each use following manufacturers instructions

  5. Contact your Hoof Boot Fitter if you are unsure about anything regarding fit or suitability

Summary

Hoof Boots can be a welcome alternative for your horse providing additional protection to horses feet. Regular maintenance of the Hoof Boot can help to increase its longevity and could even help to save money. At Alpha Animal Physiotherapy Ltd, we offer Hoof Boot Fitting, find out more here.
